Se caracteriza por el color rojo ladrillo de la corteza, que es lisa, fría y sedosa. Es un hermoso árbol ornamental, de follaje perenne y denso, de crecimiento lento. Florece en verano y sus frutos maduran en otoño. Las flores son pequeñas, blancas hermafroditas y muy perfumadas.
