Selva Triste -Coihues-

The lagoon is surrounded by coihues (Nothofagus dombeyi). They are evergreen trees, the tallest in the forest, reaching up to 50 meters. The age of the oldest ones is over 500 years old. They grow alongside water streams, mainly on south-facing slopes. Green and fresh mosses, typical of humid areas, grow on its trunk.

On the trail there are 52 varieties of flora native to the Patagonian Andean Forests and 7 exotic ones; almost 60% of the region’s flora.

There are species that tolerate lack of light better than others. On the upper level is the coihue, the dominant tree in the region; other species adapted to the shade grow under its protection, such as the blue hawthorn, the maqui, the lomatia, the Chilean myrtle, the sauco (elder) and the mena. The latter, in the most humid places, grows accompanied by ferns and mosses.
